Labour left a ticking timebomb in the MoJ

The Human Rights Act 1998 and Ken trying to dispel the myths…

In 2006, Kenneth Clarke said: “In these home affairs things I think occasionally it’s the duty of politicians on both sides to turn round to the tabloids and right-wing newspapers and say ‘you have your facts wrong and you’re whipping up facts which are inaccurate’.

Ken has yet to discover Jack Straw’s legacy, when he gets up to speed on the recent developments in Europe (a place outside Westminister Village and the M25).

The timebomb is scheduled to go off on 1 June 2010. The wind turbines will probably scatter brown stuff in all directions in the UK.

  1. Vincent says:

Ok, I give up. What happens on 1st June 2010?

  2. williamhague says:

Vincent: I will give you a few clues…

Lisbon Treaty, particularly ratification of Protocol 14, and the new powers decided at the Interlaken Conference come into force on that date.

In December 2009 the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe warned the UK to implement a measure before the general election or else. Miliband and Straw played for time and Labour is no longer in government. Not only did they mislead the public and Parliament, they have left us in a fine old mess.

We could have our vote in the Council of Europe and EU suspended, or the UK could get suspended or expelled from both institutions.

  3. Old Holborn says:

You’ll need to tell the Police to stop searching me every 15 yards….er sorry…metres first.

  4. williamhague says:

Old Holborn: I don’t think Iain Dale’s open letter to Boris Johnson has helped matters as far as democracy goes. I wonder if you will be able to book the pair of them for Pantomime this Christmas?

  5. The Man with many chins says:

I for one would be overjoyed if we were expelled from the EU.

  6. If we got expelled from the EU, I don’t think I’d be shedding any tears, William!

The Man with many chins (sounds like Ted Heath)

    and

    Obnoxio The Clown

Even before the present economic climate, it is not in the national interest for the UK to leave the EU.

What is getting missed here is that when the EU acceded to the Convention, and David Miliband re-affirmed the UK’s commitment to abide by the Convention and Court decisions at the Interlaken Conference in February, the UK’s honour is at stake if we breach more human rights like happened under the Labour government.

  8. Steve Buckel says:

Whilst understanding: “…. the UK’s honour is at stake if we breach more ….”, Why is it only the UK that has to keep its word and obey the rules when most of the others interpret with a freedom that would be audacious at a wife-swapping party?
